1. SUMMARY:
This bill, titled the "Shirley Chisholm Congressional Gold Medal Act," aims to honor the life and achievements of Shirley Chisholm by awarding her the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously. Chisholm was the first African-American woman elected to Congress, where she served from 1969 to 1982, and the first African American to seek the nomination of a major political party for the presidency in 1972. The bill authorizes the Speaker of the House and the President pro tempore of the Senate to make arrangements for the presentation of the gold medal, which will bear Chisholm's image and name. After the award ceremony, the gold medal will be given to the Smithsonian Institution for display and research purposes. The bill also allows the U.S. Mint to strike and sell duplicate bronze medals to cover the costs associated with the production of the gold medal.
